Fully Qualified Service Name

The Fully Qualified Service Name or FQSN (November 11, 2025) is a descriptive name for an &ref application that includes the following information:

  • Application
  • Instance name
  • Environment
  • Platform provider
  • Platform discriminant (eg. geographic region, VM name, or platform group followed by additional platform provider-discriminant pairs)

This quintuple succinctly specifies a particular application instance along with the infrastructure on which it runs.

Examples

  • The West 2 minecraft server, as of Nov 19, 2025, runs on the Pebblehost platform provider in their Canada region. Therefore, its FQSN is mc-w2-prod-pebble-ca.
  • The Syncthing instance running in Milky-Way specific to the Hydrogen-Sulfide VM can be referred to as syncthing-main-prod-andref-milkyway-andref-hydrogensulfide.
  • This wikiref running on Dokuwiki can be called dw-wikiref-prod-andref-tilderef.
